Nazca days with Pelagic

 INTRODUCTION

UPDATE: 2022
Since Pelagics in Lima have been suspended, we have created a new tour that includes the Punta Lomas pelagic, just south of Nazca.  This replaces the pelagics we operated in Lima and Paracas. The reason for this is both the lack of permits of the operators of the previous ports creating a lot of red tape, but also that one has to venture 35 nautical miles into sea to get to the continental shelf, which both takes time and raises the costs. At punta Lomas the continental shelf is at only 10 nmiles. The shorter distance to get out into deep waters lowers the cost of operation, why it is feasable to also operate smaller groups.
At the time being we are contracting a fishing boat, but as soon as business picks up, the idea is to get our own speed boat from where we can operate pelagics and whalewatching. The continental shelf being so narrow here makes it a great spot for whale migration.

also makes it possible to see many other birds, including difficult birds such as Peruvian Tern and the newly split full species Peruvian Pipit and Tschudi's Nightjar, as well as the recently split Rufescent Flycatcher.

The program can be done in just two days, but becomes much more enjoyable if three days are allowed. Don't count on flying out from Lima in the evening of Day 2 if you want to do it in only two days.

The three days cover completely the pelagic and coastal birds in this program, as well as the Nazca specialties and the possibility to fly over the Nazca lines.

The dates of the actual pelagics will be published on the pelagic page. It is possible to take a night bus to Nazca, and a taxi and join the pelagic for $250. Then take a night bus on to Arequipa, Cusco  or Lima. This alternative is probably attractive to backpacking budget birders. Nightbuses in Peru are quite comfortable. Some with 180 degrees seats.

At Lomas de Asia we will search for Peruvian Thick-knee, Grayish Miner, Thick-billed Miner and Raimondi's Yellow-Finch.

If the group has interest in culture, one may make a stop at the excellent small museum in Ica to learn about the Paracas and Nazca Cultures.

Or if you are "drinkers with a birding problem", you may appreciate a visit to a local Pisco bodega - and sample some.

Birding often becomes more fun afterwards.

Later we will search for Slender-billed Finch in Prosopis-shrubbery south of Ica and hopefully get good views of Short-tailed Field-Tyrant and Coastal Miner.

We continue to Nazca for an overnight stay.

It is possible to fly over the famous Nazca Lines if anyone wishes
