North Peru Birding Blitz: Hummingbirds and Endemics

 INTRODUCTION

If you only have 7 days and want to get all the best birds of North Peru, and as many hummingbird species as possible, then this itinerary is for you. The pace is sometimes demanding and we may eat on the fly or have a very late lunch if birding gets in the way. Birding is the priority on this tour. Food and sleep are secondary.

It differs from our 8 day tour to North Peru that is does a turn to Leimebamba and the Marañon valley, and spends less time at Abra Patricia. The lodging on this trip is generally basic, but if anyone wants lodging upgrade this is possible. Just let us know.

 THE TOUR

Day 1: Birdwatching Bosque Pomac-Olmos. Peruvian Plantcutter and Tumbes Tyrant.

Lan Flight 6.00am to Chiclayo arriving at 7.30am.

We drive straight to Bosque Pomac. Here we find Pacific Parrotlet, Short-tailed Woodstar, Necklaced Spinetail, Collared Antshrike, Peruvian Plantcutter, Tumbesian Tyrannulet, Superciliated Wren, Cinereous Finch, White-edged Oriole, Rufous Flycatcher and Tumbes Swallows.

We shall continue over dry fields checking for Parrot-billed Seedeater, Sulphur-throated Finch and White-faced (Tropical) Gnatcatcher to Tinajones reservoir where we hope to find Great Grebe and perhaps some Comb Ducks.  This area is also good for Peruvian Thick-knee and Burrowing Owl.

Near Tinajones reservoir is Chaparri reserve. There is a nice lodge here. Our time does not allow us to stay, but the birds are well staked out and it will give us good opportunity to score on Tumbes and Amazilia Hummingbirds, Peruvian Sheartail as well as Purple-collared Woodstar. Other good birds here include the introduced now wild breeding population of White-winged Guan, as well as White-tailed Jay, Plumbeous-backed Thrush and Tumbes Tyrant.
At mid-afternoon we shall drive to Olmos.
Perhaps with stop for Scrub Nightjar and Peruvian Screech-Owl at dusk.  Night in Olmos.
