 INTRODUCTION:

NOTE: THIS ITINERARY HAS BEEN REPLACED IN 2014 by this one.

Island Scrub Jay - Chris West

California add-on or California Land version.

Our other California itinerary has a lot of pelagics included, which is great for birders who love pelagics, but perhaps not so great for those birders who just can't stand the idea of spending several days at rocky seas. If you still want to see all the California endemics and more landbirds this trip is for you.

What's different with California Mountains and Endemics

We have planned this trip as an extension to the California Endemics and Seabirds tour, so the central part of this trip includes areas and birds not covered the previous 9 days.  If you have the time we recommend you to sign up for both trips

  • We shall visit the San Bernadino and San Jacinto mountains to get birds like White-headed Woodpecker, Red-breasted Sapsucker, Mountain Quail, Steller's Jay, Pinyon Jay, Tri-colored Blackbird, Mountain Chickadee
  • No full day pelagics.
  • The main attraction of the extension is perhaps the day visit to Santa Cruz Island for Island Scrub Jay and several endemic sub species (look out some of these may well be future splits) of Allen’s Hummingbird, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Horned Lark, Bewick’s Wren, Loggerhead Shrike, Orange-crowned Warbler, Rufous-crowned Sparrowand Song Sparrow. Mammal lovers will be pleased of perhaps spotting a Island Gray Fox.
  • The boatride to get to Santa Cruz is quite short so the risk of sea sickness is much lower.
  • Leisurely pace - with lots of time to enjoy the birds. Easy birding, although to get some of the endemic subspecies on Santa Cruz Island a short uphill hike is necessary.  The Scrub Jay can be seen with no particular effort.
