Day 2-3 Tuesday-Wednesday

With very limited distribution in Southern Mexico and Guatemala always requiring hiking, the peculiar Horned Guan is our prime target when birding the trails around the Triunfo Station. Our secondary target is the northern subspecies of Respelndent Quetzal, which has a even longer tail than the subspecies present in Costa Rica. Other birds around here include.
Chestnut-collared Swift, White-tailed Hawk, Hairy Woodpecker, Barred Forest-Falcon, Plain and Rufous-browed Wren, Black and American Mountain Thrush, Hammond's Flycatcher, Unicolored Jay, Hooded Grosbeak, Golden-winged Warbler, Blue-crowned Chlorophonia and Cinnamon-bellied Flowerpiercer.

Day 4. Thursday. Hike to Limonar 14km mostly downhill

We shall start hiking again, leaving predawn to do the hour long acscent to get on our way and start our birding as we descend on the Pacific Slope. We may see Rufous Sabrewing, Sparkling-tailed Woodstar, White and Broad-winged Hawk, Barred Parakeet, Ruddy Foliage-gleaner, Tawny-throated Leaftosser, Long-tailed Manakin, Rufous-and-White Wren, Grace’s Warbler, Red-legged Honeycreeper, Red-crowned Ant-Tanager and White-eared Ground-Sparrow.

Day 5. Friday Hike to Paval. 9km with 900m drop

The quite steep downhill to Paval takes us through coffee plantations where Long-tailed Manakin is particularly common. Near Paval we will search for Prevost’s Ground-Sparrow. After eating our lunch packages we shall continue to Mapastepec on the PanAmerican highway and from there turn towards the coast and the mangroves of El Castaño. The road had many pastures and marshes as we drove along and there were massive numbers of birds such as all kinds of Herons and Egrets, Roseate Spoonbill, White Ibis, White-bellied Chachalacha, Mourning Dove, Southern Lapwing and Black-collared Hawk.

As we arrive to our lodge for the night we shall look for the local Giant Wrens and Spot-breasted Orioles.
In the afternoon we hire some boats to explore the mangroves. Here are some really cool birds to see including Sungrebe, Agami Heron, Boat-billed Heron, Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, Amazon, Ringed, Green and American Pygmy Kingfishers and parrots such as Orange-chinned Parakeet and Yellow-naped Amazon.
Close to dusk, we shall return to the open fields and see more White-bellied Chachalachas, Scissors-tailed Flycatcher, Double-striped Thick Knee, Gray-headed Kite and as light is fading, many Lesser Nighthawks hunting over the fields. Finally we try to spotlight a Pacific Screech-Owl.

Day 6. Saturday, Drive via Tuxtla Gutierrez to San Cristobal.

We shall start before dawn for the long drive to San Cristobal.
