Purple-backed Sunbeam and Russet-bellied Spinetail extension.

 INTRODUCTION:

This trip is best combined as a post trip to the Tarapoto-Cajamarca tour. It is a trip with lots of driving. The road is constantly being improved, but it will still be a year or so becuase one may call it an expressway. The rewards are some very rarely seen birds.

 THE TOUR:

Purple-backed Sunbeam and Russet-bellied Spinetail extension. Cajamarca-Trujillo

Day 1. Cajamarca-San Marcos-Huamachuco.

We will continue straight to the site for Gray-bellied Comet in the Sangal valley. Other birds in this area include White-winged Cinclodes, the cajabambae race of Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail, Giant Hummingbird and Black-tailed Trainbearer. Later we continue to San Marcos where Great Spinetail may be seen. Some birders shall return to Cajamarca for the evening flight to Lima, while the others will press on to Huamachuco on the new road through Cajabamba. If we are delayed we shall stay in Cajabamba

Day 2. El Molino.
Early start for El Molino and Purple-backed Sunbeam. Also here Unicolored Tapaculo and Rainbow Starfrontlet. Drive back to Huamachuco.

Day 3. Huamachuco-Sinsicap.
We shall drive over desolate grassland plains via Otuzco to Sinsicap. Here we have chance to see the north-western form of Ornate Tinamou. This form used to be known as Kalinowski?s Tinamou, but it has (temporarily) been merged Ornate Tinamou, since the type specimen was erroneous. However, it is likely to be separated again into a good species once the studies of the Nothoprocta complex has been studies in detail. Also possible are Curve-billed Tinamou and several Canasteros and Ground-Tyrants. Night in basic hotel in Sinsicap. At night we shall look out for Koepcke?s Screech-Owl.

Day 4. Sinsicap-Chimbote
Targets include: Russet?bellied Spinetail, Speckled Hummingbird (western subspecies possibly full species), Piura Chat-tyrant, Peruvian Sheartail, Three-banded Warbler, Unicolored Tapaculo, Bay-crowned Brush Finch. On the way to Chimbote we shall stop at Chao, where we can find an undescribed ssp of Neclaced Spinetail. Also here are Rufous Flycatcher and Peruvian Plantcutter. It is possible to do a pm flight to Lima from Trujillo or take a comfortable nightbus. Ask us for details and quotes.
Night in Chimbote or back to Trujillo for a flight (or bus) to Lima.
