North Peru 4b: Tarapoto-Cajamarca - Extremely short version 4 days.


This is an inexpensive VERY short program to take you back towards the coast targeting for additional endemics in the Marañon drainage.  It is a compromise for those with very little time.

Day 1 Tarapoto-Pomacochas

Bird Juan Guerra in early AM for Marañon Slaty-Antbird, Chestnut-throated Spinetail, Rufous Casiornis, Ashy-headed Greenlet and then on to Tunnel area searcing for Dotted Tanager, Purplish Euphonia, Koepckes Hermit and Blackish Pewee. Then drive back to Pomacochas birding on the way. Nightbirding for Owlet if necessary. Night in Pomacochas.

Day 2    Pomacochas-Leimebamba

Rio Chido trail (tough walk - or  hire horses which need to be arranged in before hand) or additional time with Marvelous Spatuletail.  Targets up Rio Chido are Pale-billed Antpitta, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, Russet-mantled Softtail and schulenbergi race of Plain-tailed Wren. The drive to Leimebamba is 3 hours approx. En route we stop to try for Koepcke's Screech-Owl. Night: Leimebamba. Late arrival.

Day 3       Leimebamba-Celendin

Morning searching for Russet-mantled Softtail, Peruvian Thistletail (likely split from White-chinned Thistletail), Coppery Metaltail, intermedius form of Blackish Tapaculo (probably also a good species) are possible.
Travelling through Balsas we shall look out for flocks of Yellow-faced Parrotlet and Peruvian Pigeon. If time permits we shall stop El Limon on the way to Celendin, where we have the chance to clear up on the endemics of the region, such as Buff-bellied Tanager, Grey-winged Inca-Finch, Greater Spinetail, Chestnut-backed Thornbird, Marañon Thrush. Night in Celendin.

Day 4 Celendin-Cajamarca

If needed be, we shall return to El Limon the next morning. In the slopes above Celendin Jelski's Chat-Tyrant is often seen. On the way to Cajamarca we shall look out for "Cajamarca" Rufous Antpitta and White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant, Plain-tailed Warbling-Finch, Rufous-eared Brush-Finch and Black-crested Tit-Tyrant. At  San Marcos we shall try for Great Spinetail. The rest of the afternoon we shall look for for Gray-bellied Comet in the Sangal valley. Other birds in this area include White-winged Cinclodes, the cajabambae race of Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail, Giant Hummingbird and Black-tailed Trainbearer. Flight to Lima leaves in the late afternoon.
