Lima Days: Palomino Islets and La Poza Arenilla en La Punta

 INTRODUCTION:

A half day trip which could be compared to more famous Ballestas islands in Paracas. The difference is that this program is specific for birders and you will have a birdguide with you the whole time. Price is fixed regardless of numbers of passengers.

Also check these trips.

Half day trips.

Perfect tours if you are short of time, want to do other activities in Lima as well, or perhaps have a plane to catch and some time to kill.

Full day tours.

Two day trips:

  • Condor watching trips to Santa Eulalia Canyon - only 3 hours from Lima
Daily condor watching trips. This is a short, inexpensive and time efficient alternative for those that had considered to go to Colca Canyon to see condors.
  • Junin Grebe twitch
Main target: Junin Grebe and birds often missed in the Santa Eulalia Canyon.
  • Santa Eulalia valley and Marcopomacocha road
It is preferred to do Santa Eulalia and the Marcapomacocha road as a two or three day trip with overnight in the Andes to save driving time. One may also add on the Junin Grebe twitch and make it a 3-4 day trip in total.

 THE TOUR:

We leave the hotel after breakfast at 7.15 making a stop en route for very photogenic Inca Terns and Peruvian Pelicans. A short stop at a Lima park often reward us with Vermilion Flycatcher, Scrub Blackbird, Croaking Ground-Dove, West Peruvian (Pacific) Dove and Amazilia Hummingbird and feral populations of Saffron Finch, Blue-gray Tanager, Pacific Parrotlet, Red-masked Parakeet, Canary-winged Parakeet and Scarlet-fronted Parakeet. Sometimes we see Harris's Hawk as well. Reaching La Punta we check the small reserve Poza Arenillas. There are often North American shorebirds such as Semipalmated Plover, Gray Plover, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Sanderling and Least Sandpiper, Franklin's Gull in the thousands and terns including Elegant Tern wintering here or using the site migration staging point.
Additionally, we often get great views of Peruvian resident or short migration birds such as Andean Gull, Gray-hooded Gull, Belcher's Gull, Kelp Gull, Blackish Oystercatcher, American Oystercatcher, Black Skimmers and Peruvian Pelican.

At 10 AM the 3 hour boat ride to Palomino Island circling San Lorenzo Island rewards us with close up views Gray Gull,  Red-legged Cormorant, Guanay Cormorant, Humboldt Penguin, Peruvian Booby, and more Inca Terns. At the massive South American Sea Lion colony with some 4000 individuals we have a good chance to spot Peruvian Seaside Cinclodes (aka Surf Cinclodes).
I the coldwater season (June-September) we often spot pelagic species such as Elliot's Storm-Petrel, Northern Giant Petrel and with lots of luck Waved Albatros.

The tour finishes between 1 or 2 pm. You can then go for an optional lunch at one of the very good Ceviche restaurants before returning to the hotel or to the airport. (Cost: $20.)
