Colorado Chicken Race

 
 INTRODUCTION:

Birding Colorado! Prairie Chicken and Sage Grouse displays. 

During  a long week we shall cover the main sites in Colorado to enjoy displays of Lesser, Prairie Chickens, Gunnison and Great Sage Grouses and Sharp-tailed Grouse. Also Dusky Grouse and perhaps White-tailed Ptarmigan will be seen during this trip.

 THE TOUR:

Birding Colorado Itinerary. 

Day 0. Arrival in Denver. Hotel in Denver. 

Day 1. Allenspark and Pawnee National Grasslands to Fort Collins

We'll bird Allenspark for Rosy finches and Pawnee National Grasslands for Mountain Plover, McCown's and Chestnut-collared Longspurs and perhaps Spragues Pipit. Drive to Ft. Collins. 

Day 2. Fort Collins to Walden, via Cameron Pass. 

En route via the Poudre River we check for American Dipper. At Moose Visitor Centerwe check the feeders for Rosy-Finches.  Near Walden there are many lakes with water birds and shorebirds which will entertain us the rest of the afternoon.  Night in Walden. 

Day 3. Greater Sage-Grouse Lek. 

The morning starts with the Greater Sage-Grouse lek near Walden. Later we shall look for Dusky Grouse (formally before the split known as Blue Grouse), before we travel to Steamboat Springs. 

Day 4. Steamboat-Hayden-Loveland pass-Gunnison.

Sharp-tailed Grouse lek and drive to Loveland pass via Windy Gap reservoir, which is good for ducks including Barrow's Goldeneye. At Loveland pass we hope to be lucky to spot a White-tailed Ptarmigan before we drive to Gunnison for an overnight stay. 

Day 5. Gunnison Sage Grouse and drive to Lamar.

Before dawn we have to be in the trailer hide overlooking the Gunnison Sage-Grouse lek.  A long drive to Lamar with stops at John Martin Reservoir for various waterbirds and Hasty Lakes for more ducks.  NIght in Lamar.

Day 6. Lesser Prairie-Chicken lek. 

Near Holly there is a lek of Lesser Prarie-Chichen.  Night in Wray. 

Day 7. Greater Prairie-Chicken lek. 

The last chicken before returning to Denver.
