After visiting Lauca National park on the Arica-Lauca or the Bolivia 3 endemics program with birding La Paz-Lauca-Arica overland in the end, those that want to continue to birdwatch in NW Argentina can make this overland trip getting some interesting birds on the way such as Tamarugo Conebill, Red-backed Sierra-Finch, Puna Rhea and Horned Coot. The latter is very difficult nowadays at its classic site at Laguna Horcones on the main NW Argentina route.

Day 1. Short Pelagic if time permits, Peruvian Martin, Chilean Woodstar. Around 3 pm we leave for the south to San Pedro de Atacama looking for Tamarugo Conebill. Some nightdriving to reach Calama at around 9.30 pm.

Day 2. This day we shall get a taste of the altiplano. It shall be very scenic with Tatio geysers searching for the main target the local Red-backed Sierra-Finch. Other birds include Chilean, Andean and Puna Flamingos, Andean Goose, Puna Teal, Mountain Caracara, Slate-colored and Giant Coots, Puna Plover, Andean Lapwing, Andean Avocet, Puna Yellow-Finch and Gray-breasted Seedsnipe.  
Day 3.  Drive to Paso de Sico via Miscanti for Horned Coot which is the main target. The area is also good for Puna Rhea and the three flamingos. After the border crossing around midday we continue towards Jujuy.
