Budget Birding Tambopata.
Day 1. Full day birding the trails at Saona Lodge. The lodge has proven very good for Peruvian Recurvebill and Rufous-headed Woodpecker. A great Potoo has been seen recently just next to the building. The area is also good for Pale-winged Trumpeters. We shall make a basic camp here one night, to be able to get an early start the following day.
Day 2. Tres Chimbadas Lake
We shall visit Tres Chimbadas lagoon to visit a small Macaw clay lick and with some luck locate the resident group of Giant Otters on the lake. Also at the lake we shall watch out for Sungrebe, Snail kite and a newly discovered Peruvian species - Unicolored Blackbird -as well as recent records of the rare Uniform Crake.
We may also visit the nest of a grown-up chick of Harpy Eagle which may still be around. This impressive albeit immature bird has been seen on several occasions previously this year. At night we shall stay in a hostel in Puerto Maldonado
Day 3. More birding at Saona Lodge.
In the morning we shall bird once again the trails at Saona Lodge. Around midday, you either fly to Cusco/Lima or join our Puerto Maldonado day trip. You can also jump on a comfortable night bus to Cusco or Rio Branco, Brazil.
