North Peru 1: Tumbes and pelagic

 INTRODUCTION:

This short pre-tour to North Peru 2 gives you many species that are usually not found on regular North Peru trips. The forest at Cerro Amotape National Park aka as Tumbes forest is spectacular and in very good shape. The mangroves adds several other species. Our new Tumbes Pelagic is a substitute for many marine birds only found on Galapagos. Don't miss the opportunity to add these days to your North Peru trip.

Other birds include Crested Guan, Slaty Becard, Scrub Antpitta, Ecuadorian Trogon, Grey-necked Parakeet, Guayaquil Woodpecker, Saffron Siskin, etc. Camp or lodging in the newly built research station

Day 3. An additional morning in the forest.
In the afternoon we make a visit to the Mangroves of Tumbes, which includes species like White Ibis, Mangrove Black Hawk, Mangrove (Yellow) Warbler, Masked Water-Tyrant, Ruofus-necked Woodrail, Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, Magnificent Frigatebird, Tricolored Heron, Brown Pelican and many others. In the evening we shall transfer to the resort Punta Sal.

Pelagic birds we hope to see include Magnificent and Great Frigatebird, Peruvian, Blue-footed, Nazca and Red-footed Boobies, Galapagos Petrel, Galapagos Shearwater, Waved Albatross, Ringed, Black, Markham's, White-vented, Wedge-rumped and Madeiran Storm-Petrels, Swallow-tailed Gull and Red-billed Tropicbird and many more. In the afternoon we shall leave for Piura. On the way there are good sites for Peruvian Plantcutter and Tumbes Tyrant. At the mangroves of Vice one of the best populations of Peruvian Tern is present. We also hope to pick up Tumbes Swallow on the way. Night in Piura. The following day connects to North Peru 2

 CLIENT'S COMMENTS:

Posted on BirdForum

Just returned from a great trip to Peru. Didn't do the east slope (with megadiversity) but did do Amazonas at Los Amigos biological station, Abra Malaga, Tumbes, Chaparri Lodge, Santa Eulalia, Cusco to Machu Picchu and Agua Calientes.

540+ species including 34 +/- antbirds. Had Point-tailed Palmcreeper at Los Amigos, fleeting look at Royal Cinclodes (will not count in my book but glad they are still at Abra Malaga (also had an adult Andean Condor there too).

Despite rumors of their demise we had 20+ Humboldt Penguins at Pucusana just an hour south of Lima as well as Seaside Cinclodes, Peruvian Thick-knee, and Slender-billed Finch at Canaette.

Kolibri was an excellent company with great guides in each location that really knew their birds and the best places to find them.
