Colombia has more birds than any other country in the world, more than 1800 species. There is also an excellent field guide - the best on the continent. Yet, few people have been birding in Colombia. Road travel is now safer than ever. And there are many local ornithologists that can direct us to the best birding areas. It is now time to start arranging trips to Colombia.
The below itinerary has recently been tried out by our guide Ashley Banwell.
Day 1: Arrive Bogotá
Day 2: At dawn we shall visit Fúquene Reservoir in search of Apolinar’s Marsh-wren. After we shall travel to Tomine Gravel Pits where Bogotá Rail is easy to see. On route back to Bogotá we shall visit the forests around La Calera to look for Rufous-browed Conebill and Silvery-throated Spinetail.
Day 3: Today we shall visit Laguna PedroPalo for Black Inca and the elusive Turquoise Dacnis-tanager.
Day 4: We shall take an early morning flight to Pereira and transfer to La Suiza.
Day 5: Birding Around La Suiza in search of Cauca Guan, Crested Ant-tanager, Moustached Antpitta and Stiles’ Tapaculo
Day: 6: AM Birding around La Suiza. PM Transfer to Rio Blanco
Day 7: Birding at Rio Blanco for several Antpittas, Rusty-faced Parrot, Dusky Piha and Golden-plumed Parakeet.
Day 8: Birding on the slopes of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano to look for Rufous-fronted Parakeet. Late afternoon drive to Rio Claro.
Day 9: Birding the Rio Claro area in search of White-mantled Barbet, Antioquia Bristle-tyrant, Dusky Antbird, Beautiful Woodpecker and Oilbird.
Day 10: AM Birding the Rio Claro area. PM Drive to Medellin.
Day 11: AM Drive to Amalfi. PM Birding Amalfi to see Chestnut-capped Piha, Parker’s Antbird, Multicoloured Tanager, Purplish-mantled Tanager and Red-bellied Grackle.
Day 12: AM Birding at Amalfi. PM Drive to Medllin
Day 13: AM Drive to site for Yellow-eared Parrot PM Birding area in search of Parrots.
Day 14: Birding Yellow-eared Parrot site with hope of also seeing Tanager-finch.
Day 15: Drive to Medellin for flight to Santa Marta. PM Birding at Tayrona National Park
Day 16: La Guajira for Coro endemics
Day 17: Drive to Santa Marta Mts – birding Pozo Azul to San Lorenzo
Day 18: Santa Marta Mts – San Lorenzo
Day 19: Birding Santa Marta Mts from San Lorenzo to Minca
Day 20: Isla Salamanca for Chestnut-winged Chachalaca and Bronze-brown Cowbird. Drive to Barranquilla for flight to Bogotá for connecting flights to UK or elsewhere
