Southern Circuit. In 2005 we introduced birding on the Southern Peru circuit. This is a slow pace trip that also takes into account archeological sites, splendid scenery, plants, mammals, wine, food, etc along the most popular route of Peru. On this trip you do not have to be an expert bird watcher. In fact you may just have started looking at birds at your feeder back home. On the other hand if you are into seabirds this is the trip for you with several opportunities to do sea watching and a small pelagic where the Humboldt Current comes closest to the Peruvian mainland. Your best character is the desire to learn more. You bring with you an exploring spirit and we will supply the rest. We follow the classic route covering Lima, Paracas, Nazca, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Titicaca Lake, Cusco and Machu Picchu.
A trip report from the 2005 trip can be found here. Departure: July 18, 2009.

Some Kolibri Expeditions birding tours are challenging, but very nicely priced. You should be prepared for trips off the beaten track where there is little infrastructure. If you are less adventurous, you should consider our more comfortable tours where our expertise and experience come to their full for the perfect, hassle-free birding holiday (See Marvelous Spatuletail Tours - Spectacular birding and Great Comfort). You find a good summery of our tours and some help to choose just the tour for you on the birding Peru Tours page.
Kolibri Expeditions is based in Lima, Peru. We are pioneers, taking our customers to some of the rarest and hardest to find birds in the country.
We were the first operator to take people to see Orange-throated Tanager, Great Spinetail, Scarlet-banded Barbet, Millpo Tapaculo, Eye-ringed Thistletail, Black-spectacled Brush-Finch, Purple-backed Sunbeam and many others.
We have made several astonishing discoveries since the start of our programs that may represent new species to science.
Trips with Kolibri Expeditions help contribute to the general knowledge of the Peruvian bird fauna. We give economical incentives to start local conservation projects. We take very active part in providing communities with a form of sustainable development through eco-tourism, paying for access to important areas. For example, Bosque Unchog (home of the Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager) and Nuevo Salem (the new locality for Orange-throated Tanager). These fees are used for conserving the habitat, improving access and infrastructure, as well as improving the social reality (schools and health mainly) in the community. Our Eco-tourism involvement is real and genuine - we allocate funds for the NGO INCASPIZA for the conservation of threatened species in Peru.
We offer the most complete Peru program of any operators. We don’t shun to rough it if necessary to get the rare birds. When going rough we still try to make it as comfortable as possible with roomy tents, chairs and tables for out-door meals - and when possible we would use the facilities offered by local schools. Working with the local schools is a good way to impact positively locally. Clients can bring gifts such as pens, pads, cloths, toys as well as other usefull items. There is a good interaction because the kids see that the surrounding forest has a value. Eventually, the school areas will have bird feeders and more permanent places where to stay. Traveling with Kolibri Expeditions is a good way to support this development.
Let us know if you have other ways of helping. Maybe you want to buy a piece of rain forest to settle down or convert into an eco-business. We can help you.
We run any tour regardless of the number of passengers. You can see the price that will be applicable for small group size at the description-page of each tour. If you have a group of more than four people and you don´t mind having more birders added to your tour, you will receive some great discounts. See pricing to learn how this works.
