Lima Days: Ventanilla Lagoons - a few hours to kill near airport

 INTRODUCTION:

Birding Ventanilla

A short trip 25 minutes from the airport if you have a couple of hours to kill. Birds are similar to more famous Pantanos de Villa. Great to combine with birding at Poza Arenilla en La Punta.

Additional short trips from Lima can be found below.

Half day trips.

Perfect tours if you are short of time, want to do other activities in Lima as well, or perhaps have a plane to catch and some time to kill.

  • El Olivar Park and Pantanos de Villa
Good introduction to the birds of LIma
  • Good introduction to the birds in Lima. The trip can be run almost anytime. A short trip to do very close to the airport. Perfect  for a short trip to kill time. Especially good for North American waders, gulls and terns - September-April is the best time migrating birds, but it is always something to see.
  • Visit South American Sealions, Humboldt Penguin and the Palomino guano islands off La Punta, Callao with a good bird guide.

Full day tours.

Two day trips:

  • Condor watching trips to Santa Eulalia Canyon - only 3 hours from Lima
Daily condor watching trips. This is a short, inexpensive and time efficient alternative for those that had considered to go to Colca Canyon to see condors.
  • Junin Grebe twitch
Main target: Junin Grebe and birds often missed in the Santa Eulalia Canyon.
  • Santa Eulalia valley and Marcopomacocha road
It is preferred to do Santa Eulalia and the Marcapomacocha road as a two or three day trip with overnight in the Andes to save driving time. One may also add on the Junin Grebe twitch and make it a 3-4 day trip in total.

 THE TOUR:

Peruvian Thick-knee, Burhinus superciliaris Ventanilla, Lima, Per? Photo:Gunnar EngblomNorth of the airport in the suburb Ventanilla there is a fenced-in wetland with a visitor center and an observation tower. A nice selection of wetland birds can be seen here including Least Bittern, Andean Duck, Wren-like Rushbrd, Many-coloured Rush-Tyrant and Yellow-headed Blackbird. In season it is not unusal to see Hudsonian Godwit and Stilt Sandpiper. Closer to the coast is an other visitor center in the more meadow like habitat, where a trail recently has been put in which gives access to some of the ponds. Here are Peruvian Meadowlark and Grassland Yellow-Finch easily seen. We have seen the rarity Chilean Flamingo and Great Grebe here. At the beach is the usual selection of sea- and shorebirds like Inca Tern, Peruvian Boobies and gulls.

There are also some deserted grassland that is good for Peruvian Thickknee and many wintering swallows, such as Bank and Barn Swallows, and occasionally Cliff and Chestnut-collared Swallows.
